When you go into reverse, everything powers up and you get the backup camera view. Apparently the system will handle multiple cameras. Once you get things working, you can adjust the guidelines and name the camera. If you see the camera screen but the picture is black except for the guide bars, it means that the transmitter is getting power but the camera isn't. If the wireless transmitter is not getting power, you will not see the camera screen - just the normal Garmin GPS screens. When you first attach the new Garmin power cable to the GPS, you will see it updating the camera software. I actually started by connecting a 9 volt battery to the camera to test before I did anything. Throughout the entire process I was checking the image from the camera on the Garmin. I freed-up a little slack and got things working again.
The problem was that opening the tailgate all the way disconnected the camera cable. Off comes the corner panel (I thought I had destroyed the fuse wire again) and then the panel from the tailgate. I looked at the Garmin and the picture was black.
This took more time to repair.Īt this point, the panel was back in place and screwed down and the plastic cover was back on the tailgate. To the point that when I was trying to replace the plastic panel back in place I managed to cut the wire that went to the inline fuse with the camera. The transmitter's short cable I shot up along the edge of the hard top and used the double-sided tape to attach it to the side of the top. This was not too successful so I just used wire nuts and e-tape. I initially tried the crimp type connectors where you put the two wires in the slots and then clamp down to make the blade cut through the insulation to make the connection. The wires with the camera as well as the Jeep wires are very thin. All of the factory wiring is bundled up tight so you do need to destroy some of their work to get to the wires. The black wire connects to the existing black, and the red connects to the white with gray stripe wire. After taking off the tail light assembly I decided to splice in above the tail light connector so it could be completely removed. They have it so it seals around the existing wire and I just sliced a small hole in the side of it to push my wire through. Getting the wire through the grommet to the tail light is tough work. The plastic parts that go around the roll bar and the seat belt may pop out but can be snapped back when you are done. Remove the two screws holding the tie-downs and just pull up and out. So you need to take the plastic cover on the back of the tailgate off (pull from the bottom) and then remove the plastic housing on the rear passenger side to get to the taillight. I ran the connector end through the snakeskin (that's what we call it in the A/V world) that goes between the tailgate and the main body of the Jeep. Near the connector end is a "T" that has the wireless transmitter on a short section of wire. The other longer wire has bare wires at one end for attaching to the backup light, and the connector for the camera wire at the other end. The camera cable is very short so it did not go completely to the edge of the tailgate. After that, I zip-tied the camera cable to the existing wiring. I pulled the small panel from the back of the tailgate and ran the wire through the things that look like vents in the back of the hatch. I bolted the little camera bracket to this one. I painted it black, and drilled two screw holes in the mount. I used a small Stanley 90-degree bracket from Lowes to mount the camera. Another thing that slowed me down was the idea of pulling parts off of a brand new Jeep. It took me about 3 1/2 hours do do the install, but some of that was because I screwed up a bit and had some re-dos. Also, I got the Rugged Ridge 13551.11 Dash Multi-Mount System from Amazon to go with it.Īnyway, I decided to mount the camera on the spare tire mount so that it peeked between the slot in the wheel.
GARMIN BACKUP CAMERA ATTACHMENT SOFTWARE
I recently updated the software on the Nuvi along with new maps. The Garmin unit was from Costco and is the model Nuvi 2598. I have a Wrangler Unlimited Sport with the hard top.
